Autumn Term

Our topic for the autumn term is ‘WAR!’ where we will concentrate on the events surrounding World War Two.

Religion

Creation and Covenant (Autumn 1): Explores God as the creator and the call of His people.

Prophecy and Promise (Autumn 2): Studies Old Testament prophets pointing toward the promise of the Messiah.

English

During our English lessons this term, we will be basing our writing around our curriculum theme of WWII. We will use a variety of texts and film clips as a stimulus to help us engage and immerse in the topic.  We will be writing recounts, diaries, non-chronological reports, informal letters, narratives and a biography.  The texts that we will be using can be found on the topic overview below.

Weekly spellings are given out on a Tuesday morning, and children are tested every four weeks. This is to ensure that children have really learned their spelling rules and patterns, not just memorised that week’s words. Spelling rules are taken from the National Curriculum spelling lists for Year 5 and 6. We will also revise previous years’ spelling rules throughout Year 6.

Children will bring their reading books home from school every day. It is expected that children will read daily at home as well as in school.

Maths

In Maths this half term we will mainly focus on place value and the four calculations- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will be ordering and comparing numbers up to the value of ten million and recognising the place value of each digit within a number. We will then focus our attention on how we can use our reasoning skills to solve a variety of complex problems.  We will revise how to use long and short written methods to answer questions, along with finding efficient mental methods to solve the number and word problems. After half term, we will begin to look again at fractions including how to add, subtract, multiply and divide with fractions. Before finishing the term with the theme of position and direction, which includes co-ordinates, translations and reflections.

Science

In science this term we will be learning about,

  • Light (how it travels in straight lines and continuing work from previous year groups on shadows).

After half term our Science topic will be,

  • Electricity (we will consider how the number of batteries used in a circuit has an impact on the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers; the on/off position of switches; use recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram)

PE

PE will be every Monday afternoon.  Please wear your PE kits (suitable for the weather) to school on Mondays. No branded sportswear is allowed.

We will continue with our French lessons with Mrs Higgins along with other curriculum areas each afternoon including Computing, Art, Music and DT. We will also be making wider use of our outdoor learning environment.

Please note that SATS week takes place week beginning Monday 10th May 2027.

If you have any queries, please speak to Mrs Chamberlain.
