PHSE covers all aspects of citizenship from keeping healthy to understanding relationships and how to grow as a responsible citizen with a role in the world. All aspects of PHSE are underpinned by our commitment to Gospel Values and knowing that each one of us is made in the image and likeness of God. We explore our roles, rights and responsibilities through the Religion curriculum and use P4C (philosophy for children) to explore, debate, discuss and consider social and moral issues.
In EYFS, PSHE and citizenship is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the curriculum. The objectives taught are the Personal, Social and Emotional Development statements from ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ and the PSED Early Learning Goals. We also use Think Equal, a programme that promotes a positive and healthy attitude towards others through stories and non fiction texts.
In KS1 & 2, the PHSE curriculum is taught across subject disciplines including Religion, (covering the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and personal well being), PE (healthy living and physical fitness), Science (keeping healthy), Computing (keeping safe and conduct online), and the Creative Curriculum (topic based approach covering social responsibility). Philosophy for Children (P4C) is practiced in school at all levels and promotes the importance of asking questions about fairness, equality, personal responsibility and moral and ethical standpoints.
Through our cross curricular approach, our children will build resilience, independence and confidence; embrace challenge; foster a love of learning; and increase their level of personal well being.
Visitors to schools through our emphasis on experiential learning complement our PSHE curriculum to offer additional learning.
We encourage our pupils to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We challenge all of our pupils to look for opportunities to show the Gospel values of faith, hope and love.
Assemblies are linked to PSHE, British Values and SMSC and cover any additional sessions that would benefit the whole school.
